CNC Wooden Sign
Creating a wooden sign using CNC router with engraving and cutting techniques.
CNC Intermediate Completed: October 20, 2024

Project Overview
Created a wooden sign for FabLab using a CNC router. Text was engraved 3mm deep, and the outline was cut to finish.
Build Process
1. Design Setup
- Design logo and text in Illustrator
- Create 3D model in Fusion 360
- Calculate toolpaths
2. CAM Setup
- Roughing: 6mm end mill
- Finishing: 3mm ball end mill
- Outline cut: 6mm end mill
- Adjust feed rate and spindle speed for material
3. CNC Machining
- Verify workpiece fixation
- Set Z-axis origin accurately
- Execute machining program
- Machining time: Approximately 2 hours
4. Finishing
- Smooth surface with sander
- Apply wood stain for color
- Protective varnish coating
- Drying time: 24 hours
Technical Points
Toolpath Design
- Roughing removes bulk material
- Finishing creates smooth surfaces
- Outline cut performed last
Material Fixation
- Secure with clamps
- Minimize vibration during machining
- Consider Z-axis clearance
Bit Selection
- Large area removal: thick bits
- Fine details: thin bits
- Ball end mills for smooth finish
Troubleshooting
Problem: Chatter during finish pass Cause: Inadequate clamping position Solution: Reinforced workpiece fixation and re-machined
Applications
- Name plates and house numbers
- Menu boards and POP displays
- 3D art pieces
- Furniture components
Cost and Time
- Material cost: Approximately ¥1,500
- Design time: 3 hours
- CNC machining: 2 hours
- Finishing: 2 hours
- Drying: 24 hours
Tips for Intermediate Users
CNC machining requires proper setup. Material properties, bit types, feed rates, and spindle speeds must be correctly configured to avoid material waste or bit damage. Always test on small pieces before final production.
